Nice Heart JG

For those FPGPers who are not sitting in front a computer all morning, JG got off to a tough start this a.m., bogeying his 2nd and 3rd holes. Looks like he hung in pretty strong though, as he birdied 2 of the last 3 holes to come in -1 for the round. Given the huge pressure of performing with his new fan base, we at FPGP Central can understand the shaky start... and are even more impressed with the strong finish.

Way to pull it together JG!. Hit a few more fairways and I think you will be right were you want to be.

Meanwhile Badds score indicates the fact that Jesus is too busy helping me sign up new authors today to be bothered with putts dropping. So much talent - how do you throw up a number like that!

Badds is a head case! That's the only way you can go from up and coming PGA star to weak Tar Heel Tour player.

.. and that's not a knock on the Tar Heel Tour. My buddy, Tommy "2 Gloves" Gainey calls is top $$ earner on it and has the game to be a top Nationwide Tour player.

Bandit, it is worse than just Badds... look at Mahan, Tway and Badds... I may have reached new (low) ground with this week... it is possible that 3 of my picks will actually finish in the last three positions. Ugh. I may have lost the magic touch w/ FPGP picks.

Shades... enough w/ the TTG! If he had the game, he'd be on the Nationwide Tour. The "head game" is critical, and if doesn't have that, he doesn't have "the" game. I am sure JG would agree. That said, maybe you should try to put him (TTG) in touch with Buzz, the alleged sports psychologist. If you want a real one, I have a friend in Arizona that actually does it for a living, and just wrote a new book on the topic.

JG, let's auction your old driver for charity. You pick the charity and we will hype it here and on our own personal blogs.

JG... you usually play practice rounds w/ Pat Perez? That's cool... he's been another guy who has hit the radar in the past in our pool. We seem to have an affinity for guys who win Q-school.

Not sure what you mean by "overlooking" Campbell. I think he is a great player... in our pool, the points are determined by how well you do this year, compared to last... I think he didn't get much FPGP-love because there was not a lot of "upside" to him this year. FPGP picks are like stock picks... you want to be able to either buy low (like my Mahan and Trahan picks) or have blue-chippers (like the Mickelson and Goosen-ish picks). Picking young guys who had a really good year the year before can be dangerous, because there is not a lot of room to move, other than in the wrong direction.

A great example is David Duval... while he and you are close on the money list, as a pick in our pool, he has kicked ass because he was about a millionth on the list last year... he has "moved up" the list substantially, even though he is in jeapordy of not keeping his card.

Talon... I thought you were retired... you still test flying? I am officially scared of you.

Very cool.

The rules are listed on the sidebar on the right, in a Word format. It is a lot of fluff, but basically works like this. We all pick 7 guys. Each guy (say, you for instance) has as their "start point" their position on the 2005 money list. We derive points by taking the difference between that start point and where the player finishes this year, with constant updates along the way. As an example, you were 94th on the money list last year, and 144th this year, so on that scale you are -50 (ouch). Points are also awarded for money won... for each $100,000 in earnings, you get a point. Since you've earned about $279k, that is 3 "money points" for a total of -47 for anyone who has you.

As you can see, the strategy is often centered around, 1. finding a "bargain" (aka, duval) or 2. finding a guy who can make a lot of money consistently (aka Mickelson).

In keeping with stock trade language, we also pick one "short" pick, that is, a player we think is going in the other direction. Currently in our pool, the best short pick was/is Olin Browne, who finished 26th on the money list last year, and is 118th now. Again, you get a point for each spot the player drops, or conversely, lose points if they move up the list.

Anyway, that is why (currently) Duval at 145 is a better pick than you at 144. He was 260th on the money list last year, so he has gained those of us who picked him over 100 points.

Of course, this changes from week to week, which is what makes the pool fun for everyone. In all previous years, we would make these comments to each other via email, but that became tedious after a while... INboxes were full of these nonsense comments... so, I moved it to the blog world, figuring if people wanted to read/comment they could, and their blackberries would not be buzzing every 5 seconds.

I'll give you an MG a more complete tutorial on the rules after the season is over... we expect at least one set of picks from the G household! (we don't want to turn you into Pete Rose, so maybe you should have MG pick). Tell your friends! It would be a blast if this pool got a lot bigger... it costs $100 for the year, and $20 for one trade, so it is cheap entertainment. We pay the top 3 places (70-20-10)... i've considered changing it a bit next year, and also including a "duffer award" such that the last place finisher gets their $100 back. That way, it is interesting for everyone along the way.

I think it's only fair to inform JG that 2 of the last 3 winners have been from New Orleans (with the N.O contingent being 2 & 3 in the standings now), and that the current leader is a short, Italian from Schenectady (nicknamed "da Rodent") with a Sicilian heritage!

JG may have all kinds of new "friends" at tour stops next year... of course, that statement alone is probably enough for him to never visit this blog again...

I was trying to imply (rather poorly) that given the recent FPGP results you gotta double check ya numbers ---
