FPGP OPEN

Based on my last comment, I figured I'd run with the ball...
Let's work on two things...

1. We need to find out who is actually interested in playing in an FPGP Open.
2. We need to figure out availability.

Once we have that stuff locked down, we should be able to settle on a location... but let's take care of 1 and 2 first.

Who's in? And assume you have to get on a plane... this may be a home game for some, but given our geographical differences, it won't be for all. If you are "in if it is in Florida" or something wishy washy like that, note it.

Consider me "in" and I'll just toss out Labor Day Weekend as an option. I think if we are going to do this, we need to do it right and make it 3 days of golf... so something where we can fly/drive in on Thursday night and play Fri-Sun (36 / day is fine too)... I know I am definitely hopping on a plane, so I want the most bang for the buck. My schedule is wide open at the end of the summer/early fall right now, so I am amenable to just about anything... I just need to lock it in before my frigging case load starts getting full for that time of year.

To sweeten this a little, I'll go on record now and offer this bet... I'll take Robbo heads up... match play... I'll give him a stroke a hole... STRICT USGA rules... no prefered lies/gimmes (unless actually given)/no lateral drops OB/ etc. We did this chest thumping dance a few years ago, and nothing ever came of it... so I am putting it out there again. I'll give Excal the same action if he wants it. For that action though, we all play the same tees... you either step back to the tips with me, or I move down to the front with you. You can't get 18 strokes and 500 yards. Another variation... same rules/tees, but 12 strokes and I don't hit my driver all day.

Let's make this happen.

I'm in, BUT Labor Day weekend won't work for me.

Just about any other fly in Wed. night and fly out Sunday works for me. July and Oct work for me. The Jones trail in Alabama would be cool. Anything if Florida would be good too.

bocabandit said...

I'm in.

September is completely open as far as my work schedule.

October is also fine. My only work commitment is a conference in Charlotte from the 14th to 17th. I can easily rent a car and head to the South Carolina coast for the following weekend if that's a venue option.

How about Myrtle Beach in mid-Sept? Tourists will be gone, golf rates should be ok, and cheap flights can sometimes be found for Myrtle.

New Texan said...

Myrtle mid-Sept works for me... it has several appeals:

1. we can count on Shades and Excal to be there as it is a short drive (and if we are going to do this, it should be convenient for some... we'll just rotate venues).

2. good mix of courses

3. it can be a cheap stay if we want it to be... I'd rather put my $$$ into the golf and care less about the hotel... I don't need a resort.

One thing... from my perspective, I'd want this to be a golf Fri-Sunday deal... I'd like to avoid taking two days off, and would rather just fly in Thursday night and back sunday night. Like i said earlier, I am all for 36 a day.

The last time I was in Myrtle Beach was the weekend of the famous match with Joel where he didn't just beat me... he beat me straight up (the only time this ever happened)! I was giving him 10 (a sucker bet for a sucker, normally), but the temps were in the low 40s. His canadian blood was right at home, and I was freezing my tail off. I pressed, pressed, and pressed again... and he won all the damned presses! It was a disaster of epic proportions. If the blog was around then (this was 97), it would have had non-stop play. We ultimately settled on me buying him dinner to pay off all the presses... we get to the restaurant, which was pretty nice (and mind you, i am on a frigging graduate student stipend), the waitress approaches... and Excal simply says "I don't need a menu... I just want the most expensive thing on it... and a bottle of Dom!"

Revenge will be mine!

Tev just IMed me (he is blog shy) to let me know he is in for a MB weekend in September, as long as it doesn't conflict with a S. Carolina home football game... he also has a friend that can put together packages for us.

This is starting to get the proper momentum... who else is in?

SteveV said...

I'd like to be in. But, I'll be out of the country for the month of September (sabbatical --- a reward for all of my hard work). Any month in the summer is okay and most of October too.

The RTJ courses are great and they have nice packages but I'm okay with other options like New Orleans, Florida (of course) and SC too.

New Texan said...

Quite possibly the first ever "I can't golf because I am on sabbatical" statements in the history of academia.

October works for me...

How about the new proposal be Myrtle Beach in early October?

SteveV said...

Let's try to get this done fairly soon. Why? To give da Rodent time to get permission to play. Joel GOES to the Masters (the King of his castle) while Robbo can't watch the final round of the Masters with me (family conflict). His balls are the size of Leseur peas (being generous here).

New Texan said...

ha! great imagery there...

I'd like to get this locked up in the next couple weeks for sure...

So, I think it is safe to say right now that the following people would be good with MB, say the 2nd weekend of october:

1. me
2. jeff
3. stevie v.
4. bandit
5. tev
6. excal (I am assuming that one)

Who else?

BostonBimma said...

New Tex, unfortunately, October & November are not good months for me (too many 'business' trips). I'll be in England for two weeks middle of October. Maybe next year for me. Myrtle Beach is great, so this is definitely painful to miss.

bocabandit said...

Couldn't do the second weekend in October completely as I must be in Charlotte on Sunday morning the 14th - would put a damper on Saturday night too.

The following weekend Oct 19-21 would be ideal for me. 5-7 would work also.

New Texan said...

OK... any objections to the first weekend of October? I don't know about later in the month... we'll start to tempt fates with weather if we punt this thing too far.

bocabandit said...

O.K. by me.

I'm still hoping that Vodoo will make a rodent-like inquiry whether any of us can get to Croatia to play a few rounds one weekend in September.

Anonymous said...

I'm in, but can't do it mid september. I'll be in BC.

New Texan said...

Ok, October 5-7, we have IN:

1. me
2. jeff
3. stevie v.
4. bandit
5. tev
6. excal

OUT

1. Bimma
2. Stan the Man

If we can get Robbo and Vic for that october weekend, that would make 2 pretty lively foresomes.

What say you boys?

bocabandit said...

Robbo is apparently preoccupied sending e-mails about Pavano; messages, I might add, that bear a remarkable similarity to Bears' fans after Wrex lit up the Lions.

I told him to get to the blog, but evidently Da Perfesser has forgotten how to do so.

New Texan said...

Well, six is a pretty decent critical mass... 8 would be perfect though.

SteveV said...

Like the Caveman Lawyer on SNL, new fangled things like blogs and "fantasy" sites on PGAtour.com and ESPN confuse and frighten da Rodent. Waiting for Robbo to commit to a FPGP date is like trying to score against the four corners "offense" --- capice?

Vic has probably been busy wasting (uh … allocating) taxpayer $$$ protecting our national security. But I say he'll play, assuming he can find a way for the US Gov't to foot the bill ---

bocabandit said...

If Johnny V. can make it then we'll have eight and that will be that. If The Diddler then finally decides to come, he can serve as forecaddy/trap raker/beverage gopher/ball washer.

No tipping allowed to avoid any conflict of interest in his performance of these duties.

New Texan said...

It sounds to me like this weekend is going to work... any group 6 or up is fine really... if it stood as is, that would be 2 threesomes, and we could just rotate who plays with who.

JS said...

What courses do we want to play? I know Tev likes the Dye Course at Bearfoot Resort. I've played that one too. It's nice. We just need to be careful of courses that are punching the greens.

New Texan said...

Talon... I've not played with everyone, so here is my quick assessment on those I have played with.

Excal: Safest place is about 230 yards away from him in any direction, as there is no club, wind/ground condition that could get him to hit the ball that far.

Jeff: you are pretty much safe next to him on the tee... he's solid. But, if he gets off on the wrong track, he is a bit of a club thrower, so you have to watch out for that.

Tev: he's all over the place... better to stay directly behind him or in other locations where it seems physically impossible for a ball to travel. don't forget to account for trees.

Me: Currently, the most dangerous places would be about 180 yards, dead left where the duck hooks like to fly, or 280 way right, where the high push/fades end up. Typically, the middle is safe ground when I am on the tee.

buzz said...

let's talk about kahunas - today i challenged stevie v. to golf tomorrow, and as is typical -- no response! he's already throwing around excuses about not showing up...he'll probably have a long layover in Zagreb (if he ever makes it out of P-town).

I'm in this tourney, NFD. july/august are best but can do any month...i would like to suggest a thurs fly-in to a great course we all know (sawgrass, doral, atlanta, orlando, west palm, harbortown? etc); if i'm gonna shoot 100+ might as well be on a great course...

but i'll play anywhere

I've gotten a bad rap by New Tex on the "club throwing". I haven't tossed a club in the last 3 or 4 years. That was back in a time when I think I considered giving up the game because of my poor golf ability. That has changed over the years. My game is much improved, but not yet to the point I want it to be at. Weak and left or longer and push right are my misses. 250-260 off the tee with the driver.

My take on 3.

Tev: Tendency to push right off the tee. Can pop one out there from time to time though.

New Tex: Solid game. But if there is one weakness it's when the slight draw turns into that duck hook or strong hook with an iron. Safe to be left of left and right side fairway. It's either gonna be in down-the-middle left or down-the-foul-line and out-of-play-right.

Excal: He's pretty straight off the tee, but not long. Much of that is equipment. Drivers have come a long way from the old Ping Driver he has had for a few years. He would be 10-15 yards longer with modern day equipment. But I have to agree, anything past 230 with his current equipment would be a safe distance.

----------
As for courses, I will post a poll in the next week on what courses to play. Also, what is the cost you would expect for 3 rounds of golf and 3 nights stay? $400? $350? Any thoughts?

New Texan said...

I have two thoughts on cost.

1. Within reason, I don't care...

2. I'd rather spend money on golf than lodging... the reason why I advocated Myrtle Beach is because there is plenty of golf (good, affordable), and also plenty of places to stay reasonably cheaply.

As for Stevie V... ducking Robbo? Wow. Kiss a ton of credibility goodbye.

Shades gives me too much credit... he is totally forgetting the "power fade" turned "right of Rush Limbaugh" shot that I am capable of hitting.

Excal... some is equipment... some is just bad mechanics. Remember, I once outdrove him with his own lefty club...

bocabandit said...

Hey Robbo - If you're looking for a playing partner, why don't you give this fella Carl Pavano a call. He's got nothinbg to do and a lot of coin - greenbacks that you probably will need in October.

SteveV said...

Robbo forgot to mention that the weather here was about the same as in Harbortown when the cancelled the event on Sunday. I never miss a chance to take da Rodent's $$$ --- as with Tex and his wagers with Philp, it's better than an IRA.

We're not talkin' Myrtle "where's my Harley?" Beach are we? Do we not have some class? How about Hilton Head?

New Texan said...

Says the guy who wears the same stinking disgusting dirty visor to the golf course every time he plays... is that thing like 12 years old? It looks like a biology experiement gone awry.

JS said...

October 5-7, 2007 - "Don't call me Myrtle" Beach, SC. It is set in stone. Get your airline tix. We will figure out where we are stayin' and where we are playin' in the coming weeks.

buzz said...

i'm with excal if we play in sc...hilton head, or further south in jekyll island ga, or we all crash at shades' house and play his resort course nearby; i dont know ya, but didn't you or the missus offer this awhile ago?

Anonymous said...

I just came back from HH. The Daufuski island course is amazing, but $$. Lots of other quality courses.

New Texan said...

This is why we never get this thing off the ground...

I'm done. Tell me where to show up and I'll try to make it. Since we are now kicking MB aside, I'd like to remind everyone of the two best words in golf getaway... LAS VEGAS. That would be my number one choice... it has everything... golf, weather, gambling, etc.

It is now 3:1 that this thing happens.

bocabandit said...

I think MB is fine. We were at least getting to making it a reality step-by-step-by-step....

I echo New Texan's sentiments. Tell me where to be and I'll likely show up, especially October 5-7 as I already blocked that time off.
