JG vs TW

Per MG, part of Nike Golf will be paired together this Thursday at the Bridgestone. Why is Tiger playing in the Bridgestone event? Well, for those who don't know, Nike doesn't make it's own golf balls. Bridgestone makes them for them. So next time you are going to spend $50 on a dozen of the Nike One balls, save yourself a few bucks and buy the top end Bridgestone ball. It likely has the same makeup as the Nike One. Plus, if you are not a professional and are reading this, there is likely little benefit of playing the Nike One or the top end Bridgestone ball.

Get to know Paul McGinley. He is the 3rd guy in that Thursday tee time.

Sorry JG... grew up a Titleist man, and nothing will change that. Good luck with Paul and that other guy.

I like McGinley's site... it is not all "me me me." Plus, how many other golf sites have links to Cricket sites?

Well JG, you're no slouch...

A few weeks ago, I asked you about the intimidation thing w/ Tiger... it came up during the broadcast of the PGA, and also on some online articles I read, and on sports radio... basically, the guys making the point made the same as mine... "it is not like he is going to hit you... why be intimidated?" I still don't get it.

When I was playing a lot and competing in some decent tourneys, I would sometimes feel "out-classed" but never "intimidated." In particular, in 2002 I had a handicap index that allowed me to play in the U.S. Open qualifier... turns out my 1.1 index at a crappy public course didn't translate well to one of the toughest courses in St. Louis, but anyway... the guys I played with were clearly better ball strikers than I was. I struggled like all hell, felt nervous, etc... but "intimidated?" Hell no.

So, that gets me kind of full circle... at that level of Am play, particularly when you bite off more than you can chew and play in a tourney that is 90% pros, there is a CLEAR level of skill differences (and I would never try that shit again, even if I did get the index down that low... it ruined me for 3 months)... but it seems that on the PGA Tour, even when you include Tiger, the variability in skill is so much less. All you have to do is look at the so-called "no names" that have big seasons, or big tourneys. It seems like there are a 100 different guys who can compete.

So, why the "intimidation?" Why not just go out, play your game, and try to beat the shit out of Old Man Par. If you add 'em up at the end of 72 and someone named Tiger or someoene else has bettered you by a shot or two, so be it. But you can't let the dude into your head...

I know my (our) perspective is that of the fan, and we are not stuck in the moment (although we'd all trade just about anything to do that!), but when you watch a broadcast and can see ALL of the play... it is truly amazing. Tiger starts to make birdies, and suddenly everyone else looks like Excalibur before he hits his "maximum beer potential." Yet golf is the most pure INDIVIDUAL sport... it's not like tennis, where what your opponent does directly affects you... it's not like cycling where you need a team to help you "draft" and strategize. Just you versus the course.

As physically gifted as Tiger is, I think what really puts him ahead is that other factor. It is why he doesnt just win majors, but he wins them by 5 shots.

Anyway, what the hell do I know... I just felt like typing away. Just go out there and beat the crap out of Old Man Par, and you'll be just fine!

Shades, I think Tiger plays this event more because it is a WGC event... the old "Firestone" was always a big tourney w/ a great field... his play in all those Buick events is probably more driven by sponsor obligations...

Again, what the hell do I know?

Hey JG... i didnt mean to suggest that YOU were intimidated... I meant it in the most general terms. It seemed clear that he was in Donald's head on Sunday, and when you consider how the rest of the field backed off, there is clearly a "Tiger Effect" as it comes to looking at the scoreboard. I find it interesting that some of the better rounds come from the guys who are so far back that they are not worried about Tiger (like Adam Scott's round) yet the guys who were within shouting distance tended to back up or not move much.

Now, if you are a real fan of golf, you should skip that event in boston next weekend, and be our 5th in Vegas. The quality of golf is not all that good, but you won't find 4 guys having more fun on the golf course giving each other crap that me, Shades, Excal and Shades bro-in-law (not in FPGP this year). :-) I am sure we could figure out some wagers that would include you... :-)

Tiger is the best player in the game, but as a golf fan and recreational player, he is the cause of 5 hour rounds on the weekends.

I hit balls today at my course. And doesn't matter what ball I use. Unless it can fly automatically without me hitting it, I could be in some trouble in Vegas.
