Joel and da Rodent's "golf' match

Where was ESPN during the duel between these guys. First, both Excal and Robbo shot triple digits (100, 101) on a goat track in South Carolina. If no one breaks 100, there is no winner -- this is according to the official rules of golf.

Apparently, the "turning point" was when Robbo/Buzz/Rodent 4-putted the par 3 17th. Rumor has it that Joel did not "give" Rob the last putt on 17 out of retaliation for an earlier incident. Earlier, Robbo had summarily refused to let Joel have a free drop from a poor lie in the rough.

Hearing this stuff makes an FPGP golf outing a possible reality show hit. Think big, these two (and da Bandit when he sucks down copious amounts of Dewers on the course) could be our ticket to fame and fortune!

Officially it is golf in accordance with Rule 35.1-a, "It shall be recorded as golf as long as the player's score can be found on the FM dial." In as much as Heckle and Jekyl were within the definition of 35.1-a, their round is thusly deemed official. Such is the ruling of the committee.

I don't know if I'd break 100 playing with those two.

There is an amazing irony with Joel retaliating on not giving a putt... since he thinks anything inside the leather (and by leather he means inside the distance between his feet and the hole) is good, and consistently tees up in front of the yard markers.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this... last week I played with a left handed canadian who also hit in front of the tee markers. Is there some kind of weird rule in Canada that this is acceptable?

Hey New Tex. I believe that you once said that Joel routinely carries 20 or so clubs in his bag. Well, this is legit in Canada in order to kill moose that may stray onto the course. I'm sure there's an explanation for teeing it up short of the markers too.

Indeed... I would declare Robbo the winner of this match, as Joel would be disqualified for continuing play with his illegal set of clubs after the 2nd hole... that's right, isn't it Vic? Isn't it a two shot penalty for two holes, and then a DQ? I don't have an encyclopedic knowlede of the rules anymore.

According to The Rules, breach of 4-4a, Match Play-at the conclusion of the hole at which the breach is discovered, the state of the match is adjusted by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred to a maximum of two hole per match; in Strole Play it will be two strokes for each hole at which any breach occurred: maximum penalty is 4 strokes per round (see Woosnam). If you use any of the excess clubs once the breach has been identfied you are disqualified, 4-4c.

Not being a highly experienced pilot I wouldn't expect you to know about the Canadian great circle route strategery...they tee in front of the markers and hit a huge slice (west-east holes) and hooks (east-west holes) in the belief they will shorten the hole by using the curvature of the earth to their advantage. So, what appears to be erratic jackassery and inconsistency is actual Molsen-soaked science.

And the winner of "phrase of the year" goes to... Talonflier! For "erratic jackassery!" Congratulations!

Hey!! As for the lie that Robbo would not give me, my ball was on rock!! Not pebbles, not stones, but solid granite rock! 18 inches away was soft mud, not grass, that he would not let me play off of!!

Sooo, that lil' 8 inch put that he missed was not going to be conceeded! Yes, there is justice!

Excal, you miss the point... you are a walking, talking, cigar smoking, beer drinking violation of several USGA rules. We love you man... but come on.

The funny thing is that if you didn't tee the ball up 18 inches in front of the tee on that hole, your ball wouldn't have come to rest on that rock... food for thought?

No, it would have been in the Soft Mud. One 'hit it fat' swing later, the picture doesn't look too pretty.

I think Robbo may have been wiser to give him the drop. Excal probably dug into his Canuck bag of tricks and hit a slapshot off the granite.

Bandit makes a good point here... there is an entirely different kind of "strategy" that must be employed when one's opponent indulges in erratic jackassery. It really is a great cost/benefit problem... on the one hand, the granite shot looks difficult... but as Bandit points out, Excal probably has a club (out of the 20 in his bag) that is dedicated to such a shot. Instead, a shot out of the mud was likely to lead to an evenly more poorly struck shot. Further, he may have been able to get his own "gift" later in the match for a brief display of altruism.

Of course, the other thing that we need to point out is that Robbo missed an 8-inch putt. Who the hell asks "is this good?" over an 8-inch putt? Or... did he simply swat at it, thinking it was good, and Excal said "hey, that's not good!"... an even bigger joke, as Excal routinely holes out about 4 times in a round and is in his pocket the other 14.

Next time these two get together, we need a camera crew along for the ride.

As for FPGP Open, I am out... I was invited to speak at a conference that weekend, and I can't say no... not that anyone was actually planning to do the trip anyway... bunch of wankers.
