Golf Just Lost A Legend

Byron Nelson passed away today in his home...

"I don't know very much," Nelson said in a 1997 interview with The Associated Press. "I know a little bit about golf. I know how to make a stew. And I know how to be a decent man."

You can't live in Dallas and play golf and not hear about Byron's goodwill... a real loss today.

Just heard the news on ESPN. WOW! Huge loss for the game of golf. A Legend is lost.

jg... there has been speculation around here for a while that after Byron was gone, the tourney would move from Las Colinas. As you know from playing, the TPC course is OK, and Cottonwood is really not a Tour-worthy course. Further, in an attempt to get the Four Seasons ready for you boys, it is shut down for a good bit of time, and after the tourney, the course is fairly well destroyed... I played out there in June and couldn't believe the awful shape it was in... so, I don't know that this is a case even when the members would want to push to keep it here... finally, as you are also probably aware, in Irving there are all kinds of goofy alcohol laws... that is why you can only purchase and drink beer/wine at the "pavillion" at the TPC course... as such, I am sure there is a major drop in concessions at that tourney, relative to the rest... probably another incentive to move it.

From a selfish perspective, I hope it does move... we live a lot closer to McKinney (in Plano) than Las Colinas... plus, think of the hometown advantage that Hunter Mahan will have!!! :-)

MG... that sounds very consistent with what I hear about Byron... this is a man who raised nearly $100 million over the course of his life for area children's hospitals... just a great humanitarian, and our community will definitely feel the loss.

11 wins in a row for Mr. Nelson. How many wins in a row does Tiger have?

Tiger has 5... but it is a different game... total apples to oranges comparison, and I don't say that to take away anything from Byron. 18 wins in one year, on any tour with any equipment is pretty phenomenal.

Yeah, I've given some thought to Hunter Mahan's possible hometown advantage in 2007. Always the chance that it could be like Chaz III at Augusta and his 4 rounds over the last 2 years: 73-76-80-84. Never mind the lingering effects those rounds must have on him. For a player like Chaz not to break 80, we're talking overdose of painkillers at night (a timely topic in the "Big D" today, I heard). I understand the press conference of TO (pronounced TWO) is underway as I write.

As much grief as I give Mahan, he was a good pick for me... one of the top picks in the FPGP this year in fact...

The TO thing has been all over the news... radio, tv, smoke signal. I watched his press conference while at work... he seemed credible. His publicist seemed like a road whore "lying for her man."

I hate the Cowboys, and I am glad TO didnt really hurt himself... now it is time to enjoy the inevitable collapse in the Chicken Fried Nation.
