And the winner is.....

Well it should have been. I don't know if anyone else saw it, but on the back nine (I don't remember which hole) Paddy went to mark his ball on the green and in doing so hit the ball BEFORE placing his mark. Now I know we all do this, but we aren't playing in The Open. The announcers on ABC even made a few comments that referenced it, but no one would clearly say it. So basically he moved the ball on the green with his thumb THEN placed his mark. Now I realize that Paddy one by more than the 1 stroke penalty he should have taken, but the fact is he didn't take the 1 stroke penalty. Are there no phones to the R&A? In this country every country club in America would have had a member use his cell phone to call the PGA Tour and insist they "look at the tape".

Regardless, Ol'Even Poulter did good.

It was pretty clear that he did not hit the ball with his thumb, but rather, the ball moved in the process of him marking it. If he had hit the ball, do you really think he wouldn't have called that on himself?

Never trust an Irish man!

I learned that from watching Notre Dame football.

What??? Are you suggesting that they're tanking games?

The Fighting Irish haven't won anything of significance since the last century. :-)

I trust the Irish every time they get to a bowl game... I trust them to not win/not cover. Easiest bet in college football.

BTW, I checked with the official Rules Guru of the FPGP (Stan the Man), and he indicated that it was his understanding that if you accidently move a ball (i.e., hit it with your finger) in the process of marking it, there is no penalty... you just have to return it to where it was originally.

Vic, is that your understanding as well? I know you're a rules junkie too.

JG? If you're reading this... any thoughts?

I may need to start "marking" my ball all over the course.

Just dont' "mark" your territory all over the golf course.

Besides, the point is that you have to replace the ball to its original position. You can't "mark" it in the fairway and "accidently" kick it 30 yards. Hell, if Excal did that, his average drive would get to 215.
